Abenaki Home and Structures: Teacher Overview

Teacher Overview:

This poster shows different types of homes that Abenaki have used over time. Illustrations include a temporary lean-to shelter, and the framework and completed  conical and dome-shaped wigwam after it is built. Also illustrated are two different styles of multi-family bark covered longhouses and a typical New England farm house. The bottom caption explains how wigwams and longhouses are framed with saplings and bark covering is lashed down to the frame. Teachers can use this as a guided activity for K12 students to explore natural resources, adaptation, climate change, and architecture. The poster can also be an anchor for student reading and writing about Indigenous lifeways and history.
